Blood and Skin Prick Testing to Check for Allergic Reactions
In the UK, the incidence of allergies is increasing, as per estimates, 1 in 6 people have allergies and the trend is still on the rise with symptoms often becoming extremely severe and diagnoses often missed.
At Walk in Clinic, we provide private allergy testing in London for children and adults. We use both the Skin Prick Test (SPT) methods as well as offering blood testing solutions for a wide range of inhalant, environmental and food allergies.
Our extensive range of blood tests offer iGE screening for a wide range of the most common allergens in the UK. For those suspecting a specific allergy, or who are allergic to an uncommon allergen, the best option is via Skin Prick Testing, conducted by our Consultant Immunologist, in the clinic. Bring along a sample of your suspected allergen to your appointment for screening.
All allergy testing is performed by our Consultant Immunologist, registered on the Specialist Register of the GMC.
Allergy Explorer rapidly tests for up to 300 allergens simultaneously and provides a comprehensive analysis, from a very small sample volume. The panel of allergens includes pollen, mites, cat and dog fur, insect venoms, moulds and yeasts, food and latex, supplemented with total IgEClick
Allergies are actually hypersensitive responses from your immune system to the substances that may either come into contact or enter the body.
These substances consist of irritants such as bee venom, pollen or pet dander. Anything can be an allergen in the event of an adverse reaction in the immune system.
A substance that can lead to an allergic reaction is known as an allergen. Allergens are usually found in foods, drinks, or the environment.

Diagnosis
The most important aspect of allergy diagnosis is careful clinical examination by a specialist supplemented with thorough investigations to include the following:
Skin prick tests that can be performed in our clinic with same day results
Allergy blood tests, carried out in our partner laboratory - the biggest in Europe
Challenge tests with foods or drugs from our consultants who can give advice on managing the allergy
Food symptoms - food diaries will be given by our specialists
Respiratory function tests that can provide same day results
Other investigations such as bronchoscopy and endoscopy
It is important to emphasise that conducting tests without a detailed specialist allergy consultation can be confusing.

A skin prick test is about pricking your skin, inserting a small amount of substance and waiting to see what happens next. This safe and quick method involves minimal pain and the effective result can be seen after twenty minutes. Some drops of allergen extract prepared in the laboratory can be applied on the skin and punctured lightly with a shallow lancet. We perform skin prick allergy testing at our clinic located in Harley Street at affordable prices.
If IgE antibodies are present, a welt or wheal with a diameter of around 5 to 15 mm will appear. Wheals will then disappear within a period of 30 minutes to an hour. There is small chance that the patient might develop a strong reaction, however, the patient’s are monitored closely and appropriate treatment given where necessary.
Prices
At Walk in Clinic, we conduct different tests such as – a positive control, negative control and 8 selected antigens in the form of primary skin prick testing protocol. The skin prick testing costs is £400 including the consultation, with room to add up almost 5 more antigens for £10 per antigen.
There are several new treatments available for treating allergies. By following an accurate diagnosis after the targeted environmental control, our allergists may manage desensitisation drugs either by injection or orally, as needed. Desensitisation drugs mask the effects of allergic reaction.
This may lead to a remedy or long term remission in different situations.
How to Avoid Allergies
There isn’t any way to cure allergies. However, it is quite possible to restrict the symptoms. Though the treatments help to lessen the symptoms of an allergy, patients try to prevent exposure to certain allergens. However, this is not at all easy in some cases. Avoiding pollen during the summer and late spring is almost impossible and even the cleanest houses seem to have dust mites or fungal spores.
If you have family members or friends with pets, then it can be difficult to avoid them. Food allergies might be quite challenging to deal with as the traces of allergens are seen even in unlikely meals. However, you should remain alert for checking food packages as they are the key way to prevent consuming some allergens.
Make sure you get proper allergy testing done and ask the doctor about the substances to avoid.
What to Expect From the Allergy Consultation
During your first visit at the Walk in Clinic London, there will be allergy testing that involves a thorough assessment of your allergic history and medical record. In most cases, you’ll need to undergo a special blood test called a RAST/ImmunoCap. This can help in detecting the allergens that consist of – pollens, dust mites, dogs, cats, latex, eggs, milk, peanuts etc. You can get the results of the test within 48 to 72 hours.
