Private Allergy Testing in London

Skin Prick Test to Check for Allergic Reaction

In the UK, the incidence of allergies is increasing, as per estimates, 1 in 6 people have allergies and the trend is still on the rise with symptoms often becoming extremely severe and diagnoses often missed.

At Walk in Clinic, we provide private allergy testing in London for children and adults. We use commonly used and scientifically accepted Skin Prick Test (SPT) methods as well as the ISAC blood test used in the UK for diagnosing inhalant, environmental and food allergies.

We use Skin Prick Test solutions or allergens for performing the tests. Our extensive range of Prick-to-Prick skin tests take samples from the foods that might you might be allergic to. Bring the sample with you for testing at our clinic.

All allergy testing is performed by or under the supervision of our Consultant Immunologist, registered on the Specialist Register of the GMC.

What is an Allergy?

Allergies are actually hypersensitive responses from your immune system to the substances that may either come into contact or enter the body.

These substances consist of irritants such as bee venom, pollen or pet dander. Anything can be an allergen in the event of an adverse reaction in the immune system.

A substance that can lead to an allergic reaction is known as an allergen. Allergens are usually found in foods, drinks, or the environment.

Allergies may range from mildly irritating to extremely severe and can even be life threatening, in certain cases. Allergic conditions include:

  • Anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock which can produce a severe reaction in the body
  • Allergy to drugs, insect venom and some foods such as eggs, penicillin, peanuts, etc.
  • Oral allergy syndrome, also called pollen food allergy
  • Angioedema and urticaria - hives
  • Eczema that can vary from mild to very severe
  • Extrinsic allergic alveolitis or inflammation of lungs by inhaling organic dust
  • Celiac disease that cause intestinal reaction to gluten usually found in wheat

Diagnosis

The most important aspect of allergy diagnosis is careful clinical examination by a specialist supplemented with thorough investigations to include the following:

  • Skin prick tests that can be performed in our clinic with same day results
  • Allergy blood tests, carried out in our partner laboratory - the biggest in Europe
  • Challenge tests with foods or drugs from our consultants who can give advice on managing the allergy
  • Food symptoms - food diaries will be given by our specialists
  • Respiratory function tests that can provide same day results
  • Other investigations such as bronchoscopy and endoscopy

It is important to emphasise that conducting tests without a detailed specialist allergy consultation can be confusing.

Some Common Allergy Test at Our Clinic:

Skin Prick Test

A skin prick test is about pricking your skin, inserting a small amount of substance and waiting to see what happens next. This safe and quick method involves minimal pain and the effective result can be seen after twenty minutes. Some drops of allergen extract prepared in the laboratory can be applied on the skin and punctured lightly with a shallow lancet. We perform skin prick allergy testing at our clinic located in Harley Street at affordable prices.

If IgE antibodies are present, a welt or wheal with a diameter of around 5 to 15 mm will appear. Wheals will then disappear within a period of 30 minutes to an hour. There is small chance that the patient might develop a strong reaction, however, the patient’s are monitored closely and appropriate treatment given where necessary.

Prices

At Walk in Clinic, we conduct different tests such as – a positive control, negative control and 8 selected antigens in the form of primary skin prick testing protocol. The initial testing costs start from £150, with room to add up almost 5 more antigens for £10 per antigen.

ISAC Test

ISAC Test – Screening for 112 Allergens with one blood sample only

About the ISAC Test

ISAC test is an allergy testing blood test that uses microchip technology for detecting specific IgE antibodies, commonly called an allergy, to food and airborne allergens. It allows concurrent measurement of antibodies to several allergen components in a test that has a few µl of serum or plasma only. The pre-selected allergens include the most relevant cross- reactive markers.

Provocation Tests

If there are differences between the results of allergy tests and medical records, then you may need a provocation test. The allergen will be presented to the patient under monitored conditions. Based on the allergen and several symptoms it may cause, you might breathe in the allergen in small yet increasing doses or place it on the lower lip or inside the mouth, apply it to the conjunctiva or sniff. Examples, where this testing is required, will help to reveal if a child has a peanut allergy or if an antibiotic is taken safely when different tests are not yet clear.

Treatments

There are several new treatments available for treating allergies. By following an accurate diagnosis after the targeted environmental control, our allergists may manage desensitisation drugs either by injection or orally, as needed. Desensitisation drugs mask the effects of allergic reaction.

This may lead to a remedy or long term remission in different situations.

How to Avoid Allergies

There isn’t any way to cure allergies. However, it is quite possible to restrict the symptoms. Though the treatments help to lessen the symptoms of an allergy, patients try to prevent exposure to certain allergens. However, this is not at all easy in some cases. Avoiding pollen during the summer and late spring is almost impossible and even the cleanest houses seem to have dust mites or fungal spores.

If you have family members or friends with pets, then it can be difficult to avoid them. Food allergies might be quite challenging to deal with as the traces of allergens are seen even in unlikely meals. However, you should remain alert for checking food packages as they are the key way to prevent consuming some allergens.

Make sure you get proper allergy testing done and ask the doctor about the substances to avoid.

What to Expect From the Allergy Consultation

During your first visit at the Walk in Clinic in London, there will be allergy testing that involves a thorough assessment of your allergic history and medical record. In most cases, you’ll need to undergo a special blood test called a RAST/ImmunoCap. This can help in detecting the allergens that consist of – pollens, dust mites, dogs, cats, latex, eggs, milk, peanuts etc. You can get the results of the test within 48 to 72 hours.
