Herpes is a chronic infection of the genitals by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two strains of the virus: Type 1 and type 2. It results in sores to the genital region and also mouth sores. This STI is frequently transmitted via sexual contact with an infected person. Symptoms usually occur within 4 to 7 days after the initial exposure to the virus.
The treatment for the genital herpes virus or HSV is different depending on whether it is your first time of experiencing symptoms for primary infection, or is a recurrent outbreak.
*If a blood draw is required, a phlebotomy fee of £50 will apply.
The virus remains in the nervous system and is active at different periods. People with HSV can suffer further outbreaks up to 4 - 5 times a year for the first two years from the initial infection. However, the virus is less active in the following years, causing fewer outbreaks. The symptoms of an outbreak are painful blisters and/or sores on the genitals and the surrounding area.
