A smear test or cervical smear is conducted to check the fluctuations in the cells of the cervix. It can detect abnormalities and help prevent cervical cancer. Private cervical smear tests can also include an HPV test. If your test result is positive, the clinic can provide sub-typing of HPV to determine whether the virus strain is low or high risk. There is a vaccine against HPV (human papillomavirus). If you’ve been sexually active, you should check your current HPV status first. Those who have not been sexually active can get this vaccine regardless of their age.
There are many benefits to having a smear test privately done. Routine smear tests are an essential part of your healthcare. Private smear tests allow you to book an appointment at your convenience with a doctor. You can also get your test results between 48 and 72 hours after taking the test. An HPV test is also included in the service. If you need an immediate gynecological referral, the clinic can arrange it for you as well.
Cervical cancer is the third most common gynecological cancer. It’s usually found in females between 25 and 49 years old. In the UK, 62 women are diagnosed with this disease every week. More than 3,200 cases are recorded in the country every year. Over 500,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year across the globe. The survival rate is higher in females diagnosed at a younger age.
About 75% of women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer survive. The survival rate of women under 40 years old is more than 85%. In the UK, almost 900 women die from cervical cancer every year. One in ten female cancer deaths in the entire world is caused by cervical cancer. Women over 25 should have cervical cancer screening regularly.
During the private smear test, you will also be tested for HPV and informed about the HPV sub-type you have. Data gathered from the test will help your doctor determine how often a cervical smear will be required. Your doctor will also assess your risk of genital warts and cervical cancer.
Consultation is already included in the cost, so your doctor will give a follow up when your test results arrive. If your smear test shows abnormalities, you and your doctor will discuss what steps should be taken next. This includes possible referrals.
Don’t plan the test during your period. During the test, a speculum will be inserted into your vagina to view your cervix. A sample of cells will be collected from your cervix using a soft swab. This procedure doesn’t cause pain, but it can be a little uncomfortable. Your doctor can explain the test, conduct the test and discuss relevant symptoms with you.
Your doctor will set a private appointment if abnormalities are found in your smear test. She will advise you on the right treatment plan for you.
