Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial disease caused by Treponema pallidum. As far as the UK is concerned, Syphilis is one of the less common sexually transmitted diseases. But the current trend shows an alarming rise of this disease.

Various stages of syphilis

Syphilis has four stages, namely - primary, secondary, tertiary and latent. Symptoms vary between the first of three stages. In the latent stage, you are carrying the infection without any symptoms.

It is also called primary syphilis and symptoms develop 2 to 3 weeks after you are infected.Symptoms include a small ulcer or sore, which is painless and appears on the penis, vagina or the anal region. It can also develop in or around the mouth, on the fingers or buttocks. Several sores may appear together. The lymph glands are also likely to be swollen in the neck, underarms or the groin.

Secondary stage

The primary stage lasts about a week and if left untreated, it progresses to the secondary stage. The symptoms include:

  • A rash developing anywhere on your body, more likely on your palms or soles.
  • Tiny growths of skin around the anus or the vulva somewhat identical to genital warts.
  • Flu-like symptoms including fever, joint pain, fatigue and headache.
  • Swelling in the glands.

Tertiary stages

This stage develops over several years and can be life-threatening. The symptoms include:

  • Stroke.
  • Meningitis.
  • Dementia.
  • Heart problems.
  • Numbness.
  • Diminishing vision.

Unprotected sex (including vaginal, anal or oral) and sharing sex toys or needles are the biggest cause ofbeing infected with Syphilis.

Can Syphilis cases be cured completely?

Yes, syphilis cases can be completely cured with the right antibiotics. But it is not possible to reverse any damage that the infection does to your body.

What if Syphilis is left untreated?

If it is left untreated, it can cause irreversible damage to the heart, brain, and the nervous system before leading to death.
