The PCR test or the multiplex early detection is the best test after potential exposure to a person with a transferable infection or disease. The multiplex test is one of the most advanced methods in determining your Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, and HIV status.
The multiplex is a blood test, known as a PCR test. (Polymerase Chain Reaction) or Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAAT.) The multiplex test will analyze your DNA. It detects the smallest number of viral genetic material in your blood and the results usually take between 2-5 working days.
A small amount of DNA from your blood sample is compared to the DNA sequence of the sexually transmitted virus infection. The test is considered very accurate and is highly sensitive. The results will be given to you by the profssional who will discuss what you need to do next and counselling offered if required.
A swab of the penis, vagina and an oral swab can be a successful alternative which is an option if you prefer.
The multiplex test should be done 10 days after your suspected exposure to a person with a sexually transmitted infection. Prior to your appointment please make sure that you are well hydrated before a blood test. (Drink plenty of water.) This helps the healthcare professional process your blood sample easier and faster.
Blood testing is relatively simple and fast. A sample of blood is taken from a vein in the arm near to your elbow using a small needle. You will feel a prick or scratching sensation and blood will be extracted into a vial which is then sent to the laboratory for analysis and testing.
You can now receive the results of your multiplex test via phone, email or a visit to the clinic in person. (We do not send text messages). Results depend on when you came into the clinic and can vary upwards of 10 days. Consideration should be given to working days at the laboratory and times of convenience for yourself. This may influence which method you decide upon. Confidentiality however is always a major concern for patients. (Ideally we recommend you return to the clinic for advice and/or counselling. This is not always possible or needed and we respect this decision.) However, all prescriptions for medications require you to return to the clinic in person.
The procedure for the multiplex test is no different from any other type of blood testing. A small needle is inserted into your arm just below and elbow and a small amount of blood is extracted. Is it relatively pain free: you will feel a slightly painful pricking or scratching sensation but our experienced, trained, healthcare professional will make sure this is done quickly.
Sexually transmitted infections and HIV are unfortunately on the rise throughout the whole world. Regardless of sex or age if you are sexually active you are at risk of a sexually transmitted infection at any time in your life. If you chose to undergo comprehensive multiplex analysis, we can guarantee it is one of the best tests we offer. It ensures that your sexual health remains in a good physical state.
