Procedure

Preparing for the test

There is no preparation needed for the blood test. Just remember to stay well hydrated for an easy blood withdrawal.

During the test

The blood test requires a small needle to be inserted into the vein, usually on the inner arm near your elbow and a small amount of blood is taken. You may feel a small prick or scratching sensation.

During the consultation, your doctor will ask how you want to receive your results i.e. telephone, email, post or in person. The doctor may require you to revisit the clinic if further tests are required or you need to pick up a prescription.

If you have not been tested before and are sexually active, it is advisable to carry out a full screening test. Your risk factors will be assessed and the appropriate tests carried out. If you are considered a higher risk for certain diseases or are using intravenous needles, it is recommended that a blood test be done and would be the best option.
Anyone can contract an STI. However, the risk factors for Sy-philis, HIV and Hepatitis are higher in the homosexual male community. Unprotected anal sex is the highest risk factor for contracting HIV. An existing STI may also increase your risk and intravenous drug use.
